FAQ
Questions, answered plainly.
The scan
What is a DEXA scan?
DEXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) uses two low-dose X-ray energies to distinguish fat, lean soft tissue and bone mineral. It is a long-established method for measuring body composition, and it reports results region by region rather than as a single whole-body estimate.
What does it measure?
Total and regional body fat, lean mass by limb and trunk, an estimate of visceral fat, bone mineral content and density, left-to-right differences, and appendicular lean mass index (ALMI).
How long does the scan itself take?
Setup and scanning together take roughly ten minutes of your appointment. [PLACEHOLDER — exact scan duration pending confirmation from the scanner specifications. Do not publish a specific figure until verified.]
How long is the whole appointment?
Thirty minutes. Approximately ten minutes for setup and scanning, and around twenty minutes reviewing your results with an expert.
Is there radiation?
DEXA uses low-dose X-ray technology, so there is a small radiation exposure. [PLACEHOLDER — pending confirmation. Effective dose figures and any comparison must come from the scanner manufacturer specifications and be reviewed by a qualified professional before publication.] If you are pregnant or think you may be, do not book a scan; talk to your physician first.
Preparing
What should I wear?
Comfortable clothing free of metal. Zips, underwire, buckles, clasps and heavy hardware can interfere with the scan, so leave them out where you can. You stay fully clothed throughout.
Can I eat before the scan?
[PLACEHOLDER — pending confirmation of Xtheory protocol.] Consistency matters more than the specific rule: whatever you do before your first scan, repeat it before the next one so the comparison is fair.
How should I prepare?
Wear metal-free clothing, arrive a few minutes early, and try to keep the conditions similar each time you scan — same time of day, similar hydration and similar training the day before. [PLACEHOLDER — full preparation protocol pending confirmation.]
Results and follow-up
What happens after the scan?
You sit down with an expert and go through your report together. You leave with your results, a clear sense of which numbers matter for you, and a digital copy you keep.
Is expert interpretation included?
Yes. Every Xtheory appointment includes the review — it is the point of the appointment, not an upsell. We do not offer a scan-only option.
How frequently should I scan?
Often enough to see a real trend, rarely enough that the change exceeds the noise. Many people re-scan every few months when actively working toward a composition goal. We will suggest a sensible interval for your situation during your review.
Is this medical advice?
No. Xtheory measures body composition and explains what your measurements show. We do not diagnose, treat or manage medical conditions, and nothing in your review replaces advice from your physician. If your results raise a clinical question, we will tell you to take it to a doctor.
Booking and payment
Can I use HSA or FSA funds?
[PLACEHOLDER — eligibility not yet confirmed. Do not publish a claim about HSA/FSA acceptance until it has been verified with a qualified tax or benefits advisor.]
Can I reschedule?
Yes. Every booking confirmation includes a private link where you can reschedule or cancel yourself, up to 24 hours before your appointment. Inside 24 hours, contact us and we will help where we can.
What is the cancellation policy?
[PLACEHOLDER — pending review] Cancel or reschedule online up to 24 hours before your start time. Within 24 hours, get in touch and we will work it out with you.
Where is Xtheory located?
Walnut Creek, California. [Xtheory Walnut Creek Address] — full address, parking and arrival details are included in your booking confirmation.
